Define the universe and the groups
Write the total population before filling any circle, then name each group precisely. Words such as only, both, at least one and neither determine where a number belongs. Translating the wording first prevents a correct calculation from answering the wrong set question.

Enter the overlap before the single regions
If 18 people chose tea and 7 chose both tea and coffee, the tea-only region is 11, not 18. Totals for a named group usually include its overlap unless the question says only. Place shared membership first, then subtract it from each inclusive group total.

Worked example: reconcile all four regions

Use inclusion–exclusion when a diagram is unnecessary
For two sets, at least one equals A plus B minus both. The overlap is subtracted because it was counted twice. A small equation may be faster than drawing, but keep the same region logic. For unfamiliar wording, a diagram is safer than relying on memory.
